Did Google Just Update Chrome Without Telling Me?

Check your "About Google Chrome" box now. What version do you see?

Mine is "0.2.149.29".

My server log shows a mixture of "0.2.149.27" and "0.2.149.29".

The funny thing is, I don't remember ever seeing a "Your Google Chrome has been updated" message when I started Google Chrome.

Until I figure out a better explanation, this browser is provisionally classified as "evil".

it's google update service (GoogleUpdate.exe). it started from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Ah, how nice of them.

As someone who checked the "Always trust Microsoft" checkbox many years ago, I really can't complain too much against Google, can I?

Seems you have no way to uninstall GoogleUpdate even if I uninstall Google Chrome.

Not onlt does it not uninstall googleupdate.exe, it will keep it running without anything to update. Sounds like a definition of spyware

Install Google Chrome: Update versionPrint Google Chrome automatically updates to a newer version when one is released. The update process happens silently, whether or not you're using the browser at the time. If Google Chrome is open at the time of the update, you must close the browser and restart for the new version to launch. To see if a manual update is available or to check your version number, follow these steps: Click the Tools menu . Select About Google Chrome. If there is an update available, an Update button will be available. Click the button and restart the browser to use the latest version.

I just killed the process, deleted the googleupdate.exe or whatever and removed the startup entry using Autoruns.
