And You Call That A Thin Client?

Do you know how much RAM your browser is hogging?

Here today's test:

Guess, without looking at the task manager or running top(1) or ps(1), how much memory your web browser is using. Write that number down.

Now look at the task manager and find out how much memory your browser is really using.

Did you guess right? Did you guess too low?

My Firefox 1.5 was taking up 136MB of RAM a moment ago. Ouch.

FireFox is a memory munger... Well our J2EE app has a memory footprint of 30MB (when running in application mode) IE eats 60MB minimum after all javascript is loaded... Browser are to software nowdays what OSes used to be :-(

Re: And You Call That A Thin Client?

How many extensions do you have installed? Before making these observations I would first install a "clean" firefox then open 10 tabs and see that you don't have more than 50-60M ... less than 10 IE browsers :)

Re: And You Call That A Thin Client?

WebStart application compressed by ProGuard & pack200 < 64kb :-)
