When Is Next Tuesday?

Kevin: If today is a Monday, when is next Tuesday?

Me: That would be tomorrow.

Jonathan: Tuesday next week.

Who's right? (Here at the office "Tuesday next week" wins 4-to-3.)

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

If "today" is Monday then "next Tuesday" is Tuesday next week. "This Tuesday" is tomorrow.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

What about "next Friday"?

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

I concur. Tomorrow is "this Tuesday", the Tuesday next week is nextTuesday

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

The "next Tuesday" on the calendar is tomorrow, but that masks the implied existence of something called "this Tuesday".

It's a zero-based vs. one-based problem. You're both thinking
tuesdays[i]
, but they're thinking
i = 0
, while you think
i = 1
.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

It's really annoying that the code elements rendered fine on preview, but not on post.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

I think that's fixed in the latest version of Pebble. I'll try to upgrade to Pebble 1.9.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

Weiqi, this phrase is a very common English idiom. "This Tuesday" means this week, "Next Tuesday" means next week.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

Hmmm, I have always thought "next Tuesday" meant "find_next([today, tomorrow, ...], a_Tuesday)."

Now does this apply to "last"? For example, if today is a Friday, would "last Tuesday" mean the Tuesday of the current week or the previous week?

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

Last Tuesday was August 2.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

I've found this differs depending upon which part of the US you come from. In Boston, "next Friday" means Friday next week (at least when I lived there). This was very common. However, elsewhere in the US, "next Friday" means "two Fridays from now". If you overthink this, you'll not be able to use either phrase. I certainly can't.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

a little late on this response, but I see "this tuesday" "next tuesday" and "last tuesday" as all being contracted phrases, dropping "week's" in the middle. "this week's tuesday", "next week's tuesday" "last week's tuesday" etc. thus, on wednesday, "this (week's) tuesday" was yesterday.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

If today is Friday and you say tuesday, that means the tuesday coming up, or would it be next tuesday? to me next tuesday wouldn't be the most current tuesday but the one after? anyone?

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

My wife and I had a strong disagreement on this issue. She believes that Next tuesday is always Tuesday next week. However, I believe that next Tuesday is 2 Tuesday's from now...

Aha, what arguments I've heard...

If today is Monday, then this Tusday would be tomorrow and next Tuesday would be next week and last Tuesday would have been last week. However if today were Wednesday then this Tuesday was yesterday, next Tuesday would be next week and last Tuesday was last week "not yesterday" aha. there you have it in plain English my friends. Now what about the tuesday after next? Well, read above and you'll see the answer is quite elementary, it would be the Tuesday after next Tuesday which no matter what day it was would be next week, so that would be two weeks away. Thank you thank you thank you.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

Well done, I am totaaly agree with you

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

well, as per the english i learned next tuesday is always the following tuesday, not the comming one but the next to the recent.

Re: When Is Next Tuesday?

This Tuesday and next Tuesday are both future Tuesdays. This Tuesday is the Tuesday that's coming up (this coming Tuesday). Next Tuesday is the Tuesday after this Tuesday. Last Tuesday is the previous Tuesday regardless of what week it falls on. If today is Monday then this Tuesday is tomorrow and next Tuesday is the Tuesday of next week. Last Tuesday is last week's Tuesday. If today is Wednesday then this Tuesday is the Tuesday of next week (this coming Tuesday) and next Tuesday is the Tuesday after that, two weeks out. Last Tuesday is yesterday, the previous Tuesday.
