Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

I'm not talking about the other companies who still have a case against Microsoft pending.

I'm talking about you. Yes, you! You who vowed not to use a PC when MSDOS came out. You who vowed not to upgrade to Windows when Windows came out. You who vowed to never to upgrade to Windows 95 when it came out. You who vowed to never use IE when it came out. You who never learned COM. You who vowed to never use .NET or C# when they came out. You who is against everything and anything that Microsoft produces---because they are evil.

The anti-Microsoft cause lost its last battle when Sun settled with Microsoft.

It's time to recognize the cause is lost. And move on.

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

Vowed, not wowed.

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

I who vowed not to upgrade to Windows 95, never had to put up with Windows 95, you did. I who vowed not to use IE have been using much better browsers, you've had to put up with mediocrity. I never learned COM and everyone who is learning .net is now unlearning COM. How many more half-assed MS technologies can I avoid? Let us see :-)

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

Well, if I'm going to follow the same pattern as everyone else who's "buried the hatchet" with Microsoft, I'll settle right about when they hand over the cash. I won't even be greedy: Sun got a billion or two to shut them up, I'll happily make do with a million. The offer's open, Microsoft. One million US dollars is the price-tag that will turn me into a Microsoft supporter. Hell, throw in a copy of Visual Studio, and I'll become a .NET hacker for no extra cost! Seriously, I don't like Microsoft. I think their products are only ever just good enough to get by (and deliberately so: they have no quality ethic except where it's necessary to gain or retain market dominance), their business practices rapacious, and their crushing domination of the software industry has both hurt innovation, and robbed innovators of their just reward. That attitude doesn't change just because they've proven that they can reach into their almost infinitely deep pockets and buy off their accusers. This doesn't mean I'm going to harm myself in the process. I won't dismiss Microsoft products or assume I can't learn anything from them. And if the worst comes to the worst, I may end up having to use them professionally. But by the same token, I'm always going to have my eye out for the alternative, and I'm going to be much more likely to use that alternative if I can find any good excuse.

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

Hmmmm.....i believe you got that ass-side wrong...Sun did not settle with Microsoft, Microsoft settled with Sun...remember, Sun was the one brought a couple of lawsuits against Microsoft, and it was because of this that Microsoft settled (and, to get the EU off their backs)....if there is anyone who capitulated, that would be Microsoft.

Thank you proofreader.

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

If you find a Microsoft product to be technically lacking and not the best solution for the job at hand, by all means use the best alternative. I'm not endorsing any Microsoft products. I'm a Linux user myself been so since 1994.

What I have issue with is the blind dismissal of a product or technology based not on technical, or even comercial, merits, but on stereotype.

"What I have issue with is the blind dismissal of a product or technology based not on technical, or even comercial, merits, but on stereotype."

Name one Microsoft product that is better than competitors. I can only name one. Flight Simulator. It is the only Microsoft program that I have purchased voluntarily. The OS came on my computer when I got it and I had no choice on the matter.

All of their other products aren't the best technically, so why are you bitching about stereotype? They have earned the stereotype.

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

It merely serves to counter the blind acceptance of a product or technology based not on technical, or even commercial merits, but on stereotype. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you've never run into a Softie: someone who refuses to use a non-MS product if there is an equivalent MS product available. They're far more numerous than the "linux zealots".

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

I use Windows every now and then and I don't like it. The only real 'choice' I have for an OS on the PC is a free one written by a bunch of hackers. I guess that's "competition". Sad, really..

Re: Sun Settled With Microsoft, Shouldn't You?

In response to "No One"...

Some consider X-Plane http://www.popsci.com/popsci/aviation/article/0,12543,463052,00.html to be a better flight simulator. It all depends on your requirements. If you prefer an accurate flight model, X-Plane is your best bet. But for a more polished app, Microsoft probably wins.

But this seems like the statement of a zeolot: "All of their other products aren't the best technically".

ALL? Really? Every single product produced by Microsoft is technically inferior to every other product on the market? Sheesh. Talk about exaggeration.

I switched to OpenOffice to save money, but I believe MS Office is a better product in many ways. I also believe C# is superior to Java in many ways...but not in the area of portability, so I stick with Java. Making blanket statements using words like "all" is the hallmark of a zeolot.

You've done a great job making Weiqi's point.
