JDK 1.4.2 Bug, Reported May 31, Confirmed August 7, ...

I finally received the bug confirmation email from Sun on a bug I reported on May 29.

It took Sun 10 weeks to evaluate the report and confirm that it is a bug.

Take a look at Bug Parade, and see how long it would take you to evaluate it.

Compare with the 1 hour 36 minutes evaluation time for a gcj bug I reported.

It took Sun about a month to confirm a bug I reported recently. It was a spelling error on the Java Web Start "Desktop Integration" dialog.

While I'm frustrated at the slow response, I definitely appreciate that Sun publishes known bugs in a public forum unlike so many other companies.

Sun probably has limited internal resources to evaluate these things. I'd also guess that they receive thousands more bug reports than a typical open source project.

Maybe one solution is for their bug parade to immediately publish "unconfirmed" bug reports in a separate area until they are evaluated. Other people could still vote for these items and add comments.
